Better Skin Now! Exfoliation and Hydration

Better Skin Now! Exfoliation and Hydration

Winter is over, Spring is coming to an end, and summer is right around the corner. Time to break out the bathing suits and shorts… but wait! Winter has left you with flaky, dry, and scaly skin! Not to fear, Plantlife is here to talk about how important exfoliation and hydration is to your skin and not just after winter, but all lifetime long! Available now for the month of May, we are offering an Exfoliation Kit on our website, to help you achieve beautiful skin!

Exfoliation? What’s that?

The word exfoliate comes from the Latin word exfoliatus, which means to strip off the leaves. Similar to a tree, your body also sheds its “leaves” (skin cells) to prepare for incoming new cells. Skin has two main layers: the Epidermis (outer layer) and the Dermis (lower layer). New skin cells are produced in the Dermis and are pushed upwards to the Epidermis, forcing dead skin cells to shed. “Why are my skin cells dying?” you may be wondering, but dead skin cells are natural and are a good thing! When skin cells are pushed into the Epidermis they slowly age, becoming acidic and filling with Keratin. The Keratin filled cells help protect your skin from outside elements and from moisture loss. As we age, cells can fill with Keratin and die at an uneven rate and also accumulate in areas creating dry, flaky patches of skin. Exfoliating your skin helps keep the natural process of shedding dead cells balanced and preventing patchy skin. Exfoliation also gives your skin a more healthy, glowing, and youthful appearance as it helps newer skin cells to surface.

There are two types of exfoliation: mechanical and chemical. Chemical exfoliation includes chemical peels by skin specialists or different types of acids that promote skin peeling. Mechanical exfoliation involves physical scrubbing of the skin by using loofahs or ramies (like Plantlife Hemp & Bamboo scrubbers!), or brushes. As we do not recommend using chemicals on the skin, we will only be talking about mechanical exfoliation.

How Do I Exfoliate Without Damaging My Skin?

The skin is your body’s largest organ so it makes sense why you would want to take care of it. Exfoliating can appear damaging since it literally is scraping off skin cells and can temporarily leave skin red. However, exfoliation is like helping your skin breathe. As skin varies in thickness on different locations of the body, it has different requirements for proper exfoliation. We will break it into three main areas to keep it simple: face, body, and feet. It is important to remember to always exfoliate on wet, clean skin!

The skin on the face is the thinnest and most delicate. Over-exfoliation of this area can be damaging. The face should be exfoliated softly and not more than once a week. Do not use pumice or rock exfoliates on the face. Scrubs for the face should have finely ground ingredients and brushes, scrubbers, or cloths should be gentle and soft. Men in particular benefit from exfoliating the face as it uncovers the hair follicles for better shaving results.

Skin located on the body (arms, legs, torso, but avoiding private areas) is tougher than skin on the face. The body can be exfoliated more than once a week, but using brushes, scrubbers, or cloths should be soft and gentle like Plantlife Hemp & Bamboo scrubbers. Legs and arms greatly benefit from exfoliation, making them soft and keeping them smooth. Exfoliation of the body can also help prevent body acne such as back acne.

The bottom of the feet have the thickest portion of skin and can handle rougher exfoliation. Pumice and other porous volcanic rocks are typically used for exfoliation of the feet. Feet can also be exfoliated more than once a week.

I’ve Exfoliated, Now What?

Exfoliation is only the first step to a healthier skin appearance. The next step is hydration! Sloughing off dead cells can leave your skin thirsty and feeling dry and unprotected because the dead skin cells filled with Keratin help prevent moisture loss. When you hydrate, the skin cells retain the hydration, helping prevent dry skin patches and flaking skin and improve overall look and feel. It is also important to note that skin hydration is not just topical! Remember to drink plenty of water every day. This will improve your overall appearance by help your body flush toxins from the skin and reduce pore size and help prevent blemishes. Plantlife body oils are the perfect way to easily hydrate your skin after a bath or shower!

Easy as 1…2…

Better looking skin doesn’t have to be difficult to achieve or expensive. Exfoliating and hydrating are both simple ways that should go hand in hand in your skin care regime. If incorporated into your routine, not only will you have better skin in time for summer, but you’ll be taking care of your body’s largest organ for life!

Benefits and Recipes – Hemp Seed Oil

Benefits and Recipes – Hemp Seed Oil

We’ve recently announced our new line of carrier oils but, we’d like to take this opportunity to discuss one of them in a little more detail.

With so many options in the wonderful world of natural carrier oils, it can be difficult to choose the right one for your specific needs.  Then, what do you do with the oil?  To shed a little light on the subject, let’s take a look at one of our carriers, Hemp Seed Oil.

Why Hemp Seed Oil?

For the scientific how’s and why’s, check out the stimulating video below.  In layman’s terms, because it’s awesome!  Seriously though, if you suffer from Acne, Psoriasis, Eczema, Dry Skin, PMS, or if you’re looking to strengthen your hair and nails then Hemp Seed Oil is your go to oil!

Acne – Hemp is non-comedogenic meaning, it won’t clog pores.  Hemp goes on like any oil however, it completely absorbs into the skin within minutes, leaving your skin feeling smooth and hydrated, helping reduce inflammation of existing acne, heal scars left by old acne and preventing the development of new acne!  To accentuate Hemp Oils’ benefit, try adding a few drops of Lavender and/or Tea Tree Essential Oils.

Eczema – When ingested, Hemp seed oil has (according to a University of Kuopio, Finland study – Read More), shown to reduce “dryness, itching” and improve the overall symptoms of eczema.  When used topically, Hemp oil helps soothe and restore the skin due to it being high in essential fatty acids. Boost the benefits of Hemp on eczema patches by adding one of the following essential oils: ChamomileClary SageFrankincenseGeranium,LavenderSandalwoodTea TreePatchouli, and Rosemary

Psoriasis – Vitamin D as well as the balanced EFA’s make Hemp Oil most beneficial in treating and preventing psoriasis as well as plain old dry skin!  Try adding Essential Oils in the following aromas for psoriasis or dry skin treatment: BergamotChamomileLavenderJuniperSandalwoodTea Tree or Patchouli.

Inflammation – Hemp Seed Oil can help relieve not just topical inflammation (see acne) but, joint and muscle inflammation as well making it excellent for massage.  For inflammation, try the following essential oils: CassiaPeppermintEucalyptusBlack PepperClove or our own Plantlife Sports Relief blend.

Recipes!!!

What fun and healthy things can you make with your Hemp Seed Oil?  Since Plantlife 100% Pure, Organic Hemp Seed Oil can be ingested (like Olive Oil) I’ve compiled some great cooking recipes as well as body care recipes for you below!

Body Care

Massage Oil

As Hemp Oil is a natural topical anti-inflammatory, try mixing 10 drops of Plantlife’s Sports Relief Essential Oil Blend in 4 ounces of Hemp Seed Oil.  Massage gently into skin for sore, strained or arthritic joints and muscles.

After Bath Body Oil

1 – 8oz bottle Plantlife Hemp Seed Oil

Essential Oils

Per 8oz bottle, add up to 25 to 30 drops of the essential oil (or oils) of your choice.  For Dry skin, Acne, Psoriasis or eczema, see the recommended essential oils above.  Store in a cool, dark place and shake well before each use.  You can make smaller batches of body oil too.  The rule of thumb is 10 drops of essential oil for every 4 ounces of carrier oil.  If the aroma is not strong enough, feel free to add a few more drops – don’t go overboard though, the aroma will change once it’s fully combined with the carrier oil.  Shake well before each use.

Soothing Soap Scrub

This recipe can be made in large batches so the measurements below are provided in “part”

3 Parts Ground Soap Scraps (Can use your own soap scraps, grains or chunks of soap bars ground in a blender or processor)

1 Part Hemp Seed Oil

1 Part Oatmeal

1 Part Water

1 Sanitized Wide Mouth Jar

On low heat (or in crockpot on low) add ground soap to water and melt slowly.  Once fully melted, turn off heat and let cool for a few minutes.  Add 1 Part Hemp Seed Oil and mix thoroughly.  Add 1 Part Oatmeal and mix.  Let cool completely then fill your sanitized jar.

Soothing Body Balm/Salve

1 Sterilized Jar

1 Tablespoon Beeswax Beads (Vegan?  Substitute Carnuba or Candelilla Wax for Beeswax)

4 Tablespoons Shea or Avocado Butter

3 Tablespoons Hemp Seed Oil

6 drops Rosemary Essential Oil

6 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

6 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Gently melt wax beads, Shea Butter, and Hemp Seed Oil together on low heat.  Remove from heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.  Add the Essential Oils and mix thoroughly.  Pour mixture into the sterilized jar and allow to cool completely before affixing the lid. Recipe yields ½ cup of balm.

Note:  You can certainly change the essential oils to create a body balm for your specific needs.

Whipped Shea Butter

1 Wide Mouthed, Sterilized container

½ Cup Shea Butter

1/3 Cup Hemp Seed Oil

1 teaspoon cornstarch

Essential Oils (optional)

Place Shea Butter in a mixing bowl and begin to beat with a stand or electric hand mixer until soft.  This may take a while.  Note:  If the butter is too hard, soften slightly in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.  Do not melt in microwave.

Gradually add the Hemp Seed oil very slowly.  Blend well between additions.  Blend in cornstarch. Blend in 10-15 drops of Essential Oil. Mix until all ingredients are fully incorporated and spoon into the sanitized jar.

2 Ripe avocados

¼ Cup Hemp Seed Oil

Introducing… 100% Pure Argan Oil

Introducing… 100% Pure Argan Oil

607-1320_3

It is with great excitement we announce the arrival of 100% Pure Argan Oil to the Plantlife family of products!

We’ve anticipated its arrival for quite some time as the noted benefits of this incredible oil tend to verge on legendary.  Personally, I’ve used this oil on my scalp and hair for the last two years and I no longer experience dry, breaking, flyaway strands!  It is also said to help with hair loss, dry, itchy and irritated scalp  as well as add the moisture your locks need to heal and prevent damage.

In the US, Argan Oil as a skin and hair care product is relatively new  when compared with traditional natural oils like Jojoba, Grapeseed etc.  Though it has been used by Moroccans for centuries both externally and internally.  Argan oil is cold pressed from the crushed nuts of the Argania spinosa (Argan Tree).  This is an incredibly laborious process performed primarily by Moroccan women. Plantlife’s Organic Argan Oil is sourced from a coop of such women who are able to sustain their families financially from these efforts.

While Argan is exceptional for hair care, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the phenomenal benefits for skincare as well.  Here is a sample of the important benefits:

  • Highly  Moisturizing
  • Absorbs into skin quickly
  • Rich in Vitamin E
  • Rich in natural Phenolic Acid
  • Rich in Carotenes
  • Natural Anti-oxidant
  • High in Fatty and Essential Fatty Acid

So why is any of this important for your skin?

Simplified, this means that not only will this oil be helpful in reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles but, it will also help prevent the signs of aging by fighting off those nasty free redicals.  Because it is highly moisturizing and absorbs into the skin quickly, you can essentially replace your daily moisturizer (not your sunscreen) with this beautiful oil!  Also, Argan is highly recommended for treatment of Acne (it won’t clog pores), Psoriasis, Eczema, and stretch marks!  What more could you ask for in one simple, natural product?

Winter Weather Essential Oils

Winter Weather Essential Oils

We can effectively “winterize” our homes and ourselves naturally with aromatic and fun do-it-yourself projects. I’ve compiled a list of just some of the things you can do to make this winter a little easier on your home, body and mind!

Body & Hair

Due to chilly temperatures, high winds and lower humidity in winter, our skin tends to dry out quickly which can be itchy, uncomfortable and downright irritating. It is important to keep our skin covered and out of the elements whenever possible though it isn’t always feasible so, a little prevention goes a long way!

Dry Skin
Help prevent dry skin this winter by adding some pure essential oils to your routine. Oils like Frankincense, Lavender, Rosemary, Sandalwood and Geranium are excellent to create your own body oil or even add to your existing (fragrance free) products.

Dry Skin Recipe
Mix well in glass container/jar. Use immediately following shower or bath while skin is still damp and massage gently into skin. Keep container/jar covered and store in cool, dark area between uses. The above essential oils can be substituted for an earthier aroma by replacing the geranium with Frankincense or Sandalwood.

Chapped Skin
Chapped, cracked skin results from exceptionally dry skin and can be very painful. Healing essential oils like Lavender, Patchouli and Chamomile can be quite effective in relieving the pain and hydrating the affected area. I make a smaller version of the Dry Skin Recipe above for my husband however, I use 2 ounces of Carrot oil and 5 drops each of Patchouli and Lavender. I like to store this blend in a travel size bottle for the hubby to take with him.

Athlete’s Foot
Though Athlete’s foot isn’t relegated to just the winter months, I think it’s important to recognize, especially for those of you involved in winter sports. A simple and relaxing foot soak at night will not only help fight this fungus but invigorate sore, tired feet (awesome after a long day of skiing or snowboarding).

Athlete’s Foot Recipe
Fill bowl or spa 2/3 of the way full with hot water (not scalding). Add the essential oils and gently mix. Soak feet for 15 to 20 minutes or until the water turns cold. Allow feet to dry completely before wearing socks or shoes.

Dandruff
Essential oils like Cypress, Rosemary, Peppermint, Lavender, Basil and Thyme are all excellent for treating dandruff. You can add any of the oils to an existing (fragrance free) shampoo or conditioner (10 drops essential oil per 8oz). You can also create your own warm oil stimulating blend!

Warm Oil Recipe
Heat Jojoba oil in microwave for approximately 15 seconds until oil is lukewarm but not hot. Mix in Rosemary and Peppermint essential oils. Apply to damp, freshly washed scalp and massage in circular motions throughout entire scalp. Allow oil to sit in hair for 15 minutes then rinse clean. Use once a week or as needed.

Home

Your home can fall prey to a myriad of winter related issues including moisture, mold and even infestation problems. While essential oils won’t stop your roof from leaking or shovel your driveway, they may help purify the air and spirit!

Mold/Mildew
To help fight mold and mildew that forms when moisture collects in the home, try diffusing Tea Tree or Rosemary essential oils. These oils will help cleanse the air of invading fungi which, in the long run can help with allergies and respiratory issues.

Fresh air
My home isn’t necessarily prone to mold issues during the winter however I do have a problem with dry, stale air. Every night, I like to diffuse a blend of Sweet Orange, Bergamot and Grapefruit essential oils to not only purify the air, but also to remove the flat, stagnant smell that permeates throughout the house from the lack of fresh air. As it happens, this particular blend lifts my mood considerably on those long, dark winter nights.

Fresh Air Recipe
Mix distilled water and essential oils in spray bottle. Shake to combine. Spray liberally throughout home. Store in a cool, dark place and shake before each use.

Rodents
Some of us experience rodent infestations in the late fall early winter. I suppose those lovely little creatures are just looking for an abundant food source as well as a warm, safe place to hideout however, my house is not a viable option. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t kill them, I just want them to know they aren’t welcome to stay. You too can repel rodents by simply adding a few drops of Peppermint Essential oil to cotton balls and placing the cotton balls in and around any entry/exit points or common areas rodents would be attracted to (kitchens, near animal and other food storage areas). Make sure to keep these cotton balls away from areas where children and pets can reach them.

Health

Colds and Flu
Tis nearly the dreaded cold and flu season and time to stock up on those essential oils no home should be without. While we’ve already extolled the virtues of Eucalyptus essential oil and its many noteworthy healing properties (read more here), there are other oils like Tea Tree, Lavender and Peppermint that can help you defend yourself against the nasty bacterial and viral infections that abound this time of year.

Aside from diffusing Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and Lavender essential oils, you can also carry a handkerchief or tissue with you that has a few drops of your chosen oil (I like Peppermint). You can use this to inhale the aroma and clear your sinuses or even when working with or around sick people.

For sore throats, try gargling with Tea Tree Essential Oil. Simply add 2 drops of Tea Tree Oil to 4 ounces of water and gargle to coat. Do not ingest, just spit out. Repeat as needed.

For kids, add a few drops of Eucalyptus and Lavender essential oils to a humidifier to not only ease nasal and chest congestion but also to promote sleep.

For a simple, yet all around effective essential oil kit, try Plantlife’s Basic Sampler Set. This set includes Lavender, Peppermint, Sweet Orange, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Tea Tree Essential Oil. All the oils you need to get you started!

Note: Always dilute essential oils prior to topical use. Be certain to test all oils to ensure no reaction occurs. To test, simply apply 1 drop with carrier oil to the crook of your elbow and allow oil to absorb. If reaction occurs, discontinue use immediately.

Our Favorite Things…

Our Favorite Things…

I know this isn’t “The Sound of Music” nor am I Oprah but, I thought it would be fun to share a few of our employees favorite things with you so you can see that we love and use the wonderful products we make!

So I polled some of the front office crew and asked them to share their favorite Plantlife product and why they enjoy using it. Here’s what I got!

Patty Taulbee – Does a little of everything but not much of anything…

Favorite Product: Bar Soap

OK so the running joke with people who know me is that I always have a “new favorite” product. If you spend any time with me, you would hear all about what is good for you and what is not good for you (skin is your largest organ and EVERYTHING gets absorbed into your system)! I always look past the marketing hype on everything and look at the results…results ALWAYS speak the truth!

When I was getting into making my own body care products years ago, I did so because the result from products I was using caused dry skin, cracked skin, chemical sensitivity, weird bumps on my skin, clogged pores, and the list goes on. All I knew was that the more I slathered stuff on, the worse it got. Now, many years later, I understand why and I am grateful that I cared enough about myself to not listen to the marketing hype but do my own research and come to my own conclusions. I’m supposed to be writing about my favorite Plantlife product but had to precede it with a little about me…so whoever reads this understands I’m not just trying to promote product.

Plantlife products are all awesome…for many reasons. Probably the most important one is the ingredients. It’s like cooking, if you use fresh, high quality ingredients, your dish will have more nutritional value and taste better. All Plantlife products are made with the purest, freshest, highest quality ingredients.

When I think about which Plantlife product is my favorite, I can’t decide. They are all awesome and so healthy for the body. I think though if I have to choose one, it would be our soap. Plantlife soap is very moisturizing, has a fairly neutral Ph and always makes me feel soft and clean (and the aromas are all soooooooo yummy). Every time I take a different soap home from work, I report back and tell everyone about my “new favorite” (Plantlife has 28 different soaps)! I’ve tried other products to wash with but I always go back to our bar soap…why, because of the results and the aromas!

Nancy Baldini – National Sales Manager (really)

Favorite Product: Sore Muscle Massage Oil

My favorite product is the Sore Muscle massage oil. After a long commute sitting in rush hour traffic, by the time I get home my shoulders and back are so tense, I immediately turn to my sore muscle massage oil. Within minutes the tension is gone and the soreness has faded away. I also massage the bottoms of my feet after working a long day at a trade show or just wearing those “oh so cute” shoes (that are not so cute by the end of the day).

Judy Smith – Everybody’s Favorite Person (in the whole world)
Favorite Product: Foam Soap (Fresh Mint to be specific) and Herbal Lip Balm

I simply cannot live without Fresh Mint Foam Soap. I love the fresh and lively aroma of this soap and the clean rinse formula. I really like the fact that I can clean almost any surface and the aroma fills the air and lasts all day.

Running a close second to the Foam Soap, you’ll never find me without an Herbal Lip balm (or ten). I don’t really use the lip balm the traditional way. With my advanced wisdom (age) comes pretty thin skin which is prone to minor cuts and scrapes. The herbal lip balm eases the pain and helps my skin to heal quickly without scarring.

Jennifer Howe – Tid Bits and Whatnots Coordinator (I just made that title up)
Favorite Product: Geranium Essential Oil

This one took me a while. I was just so torn between the Sore Muscle Bath Salts and the Geranium EO but, a decision had to be made and I went with the one product I use most often. I don’t exercise enough to warrant Sore Muscle Salt baths every night…

Let’s put aside the fact that I adore the floral aroma of Geranium Essential Oil almost as much as I love “new baby smell”, the insane and numerous benefits of this wonder essential oil make it my numero uno, most favorite product ever in history. Ok, that’s a little dramatic but seriously folks, it’s in the top five for certain.

I first used Geranium in my homemade skincare products (including toner and body oil) and loved the effects. The toner tightened and brightened while the body oil moisturized and balanced my skin. The more I researched, the more in love with the oil I fell.

Having an hormonal imbalance can be quite disturbing (just ask my husband of 12 years). The aroma-therapeutic effect of Geranium helps to balance my hormones, therefore my emotions, therefore my life. As an added bonus, just 10 drops in my bath water, helps quiet my tumultuous mind before bedtime.

Carrie Garcia – Production Manager (biggest job of all!)
Favorite Product: Ginger Berry Body Oil and Lemongrass Body Wash

I had to pick two because there is no way I could choose just one! For me, the Ginger Berry Body Oil is the best thing since sliced bread. Nothing beats rubbing the oil into my skin after a shower or bath and feeling the softening effects hours later. Also, I’m a busy mom and don’t have time to get regular pedicures so I rub a little Body Oil into my feet after the shower and they stay soft and supple with no cracking or sandpaper texture.

I have to also choose Lemongrass Body Wash because my kids love it. With three boys (4 if you count my husband), you can imagine soap is a hot commodity in our house. The Body Wash is not only a hygienic alternative to bar soap since it’s shared but, it also makes a great bubble bath. Plus, I don’t have slippery pieces of soap to scrub off the bottom of the tub afterwards.

Remember, we’re always happy to answer any questions you may have. You can email us at info@plantlife.net or give us a call Monday through Thursday 7:00am to 5:00pm PST.
